| Hear from Thomas Tobin, an internationally recognized scholar, author, and speaker on technology-mediated education, at ICON Day 2023. Join the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology on Friday, Oct. 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the International Ballroom. You’ll leave with actionable strategies to re-frame access and inclusion conversations and use-them-now resources to learn more about all 31 universal design for learning checkpoints and how to apply them. Thank you to our campus partners—including the Office of the Provost, University Libraries, the College of Education, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, and Distance and Online Education—for supporting ICON Day 2023. | | If you missed a recent SCIT meeting where we spoke with high school faculty from the area, you can still review a recording of this panel session. Anna Jensen, lecturer in Health and Human Physiology, attended the event because she’s currently teaching two first-year seminar courses. “It was definitely worth the time I invested, and there were insights I can apply to every class I teach,” says Jensen. “I captured so many ideas, and it helped me generate a starting point to get to know my students.” | | | We're excited to announce that this year’s Innovations in Teaching with Technology Awards will begin accepting proposals on Thursday, Sept. 14. The awards provide funding for innovative and results-oriented learning technology projects that raise the level of teaching and learning at Iowa and have the potential to impact student success and retention. If you've been experimenting with teaching approaches that involve technology, we encourage you to submit your proposal by Monday, Oct. 16. | | Discuss ways you can design ICON course sites to be more accessible for everyone. We’ll go beyond quick tips (though we’ll have those, too) and get into how to organize and set up courses. We’ll also include resources for faculty who may need accommodations themselves. Join this virtual meeting on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 3 p.m. to learn how to build accessibility into your ICON sites. | | | The Data-Informed Teaching Community of Practice is open to faculty who are interested in collaborating with other instructors and supporting one another in using data insights to improve student success at the course and/or program level. The community explores teaching and learning data available to identify barriers to student learning and generate solutions. The next meeting will be held on Monday, Sept. 25, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. To join, simply fill out this form. | | The landscape of student engagement data is expanding rapidly. Real time insights into student behaviors, eTextbook interactions, views and downloads of learning material, and assignment submission trends are now at instructors’ fingertips. Register for the Data-Informed Teaching Workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 4, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. or Thursday, Oct. 5, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. You'll gain a clear understanding of these metrics and learn how you can use them to elevate your teaching, refine course design, and discuss effective, timely interventions for students. | | | We hope you feel recharged after a well-deserved break and are excited for another academic year.
