Sandbox classroom provides opportunities to test technologies

In collaboration with Classroom Management and Operations, OTLT Learning Spaces Technology has established North Hall 103 as a sandbox classroom. This partnership will introduce new classroom tools and technologies into a production environment. This environment will allow us to obtain real-world feedback from faculty and students to better inform classroom technology needs.

Funding available for teaching projects

The Innovations in Teaching with Technology Awards (ITTA) provide funding for results-oriented instructional technology projects that raise the level of teaching and learning at Iowa and have the potential to impact student success and retention. If you've been experimenting with innovative teaching approaches that involve technology, we encourage you to submit your proposal by Tuesday, Oct. 15.

ICON Direct: Order winter and spring textbooks

The University of Iowa’s inclusive access program, ICON Direct, hits a new achievement, with a total of over $11.2 million in student savings as of the end of the academic year 2023-2024. The textbook adoption period for winter 2024 and spring 2025 begins Tuesday, Oct. 1, and ends Monday, Dec. 23.

$10 Top Hat

The ICON Direct program’s new lower price of $10 for Top Hat has resulted in 35% more orders for the fall 2024 semester versus fall 2023. Top Hat can make your classes more interactive, facilitate class discussions, guide lectures, encourage peer instruction, and allow for immediate student feedback and polling.

Azure Virtual Desktop available in TILE rooms

Azure Virtual Desktop is a new service available to pilot in university TILE classrooms for the fall 2024 semester. It allows students and faculty to access needed software from their own devices, even if their personal devices don’t meet the compute requirements.

2025 OpenHawks OER grant recipients announced

Congrats to the receipts of this year’s OpenHawks OER Grants. OpenHawks is a campus-wide grant program, awarded by the University of Iowa Libraries, that funds faculty efforts to replace high-cost textbooks with open educational resources (OERs) for enhanced student success. These projects will be created using the Pressbooks platform

Course Accessibility for Everyone (CAFE): Basic ICON tips

Join this virtual session on Friday, Sept. 13, from 10 to 11 a.m. to learn some basics to help make your ICON course site accessible to all your students. This session will focus on how to improve some easy-to-fix potholes in site design, such as usage of headings, tables, or color contrast, so you can make sure any user can navigate and use your site with ease. By making these simple changes to your ICON site, you're making your course accessible for everyone.
