MAUI 2.0 Preview

Bill Evanson, Becky Tjelmeland, Dennis Crall - ITS

The goal of MAUI 2.0 is to make system wide updates and improvements to MAUI.  This fall the MAUI team has been working on modernizing our user interface to better align with new UI Branding.  We plan on rolling these changes out the week of February 8th.

You can view a quick preview, here: https://www.maui.uiowa.edu/pub/design/new-look.page.

MAUI Help Site

Alysha Ahlf, Elissa Thoman, and Emily Johnson - Office of the Registrar

MAUI Help site is being developed to feature help pages with step-by-step instructions. The Office of the Registrar will partner with Admissions, Advising, Billing and Financial Aid to provide comprehensive MAUI Help pages.

We know it’s not always clear which office manages the different pieces in MAUI. With that in mind, we will organize content by user role instead of office, organized for Advisors, Faculty/Instructors and Staff. Will include a Glossary area where folks can search for content by specific topic.

Additionally, the MAUI Help Site will feature areas where we will highlight the following:

  • help info for upcoming MAUI processes
  • an area to indicate known MAUI issues and update when those have been resolved
  • an area to provide information on scheduled MAUI processes (how often section vs course description info flows to MyUIetc)
  • an area to request training and an area to request MAUI access

The site will likely require HawkID and password to access content.

If there is information you have tried to find on our website or if you have ideas of content areas we could add, please email reg-maui-support@uiowa.edu to let us know.

CIP Code Updates in MAUI

Becky Keogh and Chris Carlson - Office of the Registrar

Becky Keogh and Chris Carlson presented on CIP code updates. Each program of study has a CIP (Classification of Instruction Programs) code which impacts reporting, financial aid, international students, and potentially more. The U.S. Department of Education releases new CIP codes every 10 years. A subset of these codes are labeled as STEM and can have an impact on an international student’s I-20.

The 2010 CIP codes are currently in MAUI and the Office of the Registrar is in the process of updating to the 2020 CIP codes. The federal government added hundreds of new codes for the 2020 set. Only three programs of study are affected by the update to 2020 and those are within Pre-Podiatry and Pre-Veterinary programs. All other CIP codes remain unchanged.

You can find a list of CIP codes here: https://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cipcode/

STEM codes: https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/stem-opt-hub/eligible-cip-codes-for-the-stem-opt-extension

You will be able to view if a CIP code is a Board of Regents STEM code or a Homeland Security STEM code in MAUI after the 2020 update is complete.

Fall Commencement Update

Sara Sullivan and Josh Hutchison - Office of the Registrar

Commencement went well and we highlighted the marching band’s wonderful contributions. We successfully completed our very first ALL IN HOUSE virtual production. We had a few things to address and we learned from it! We are confident in our ability to make adjustments to continue building upon the excellent foundation.

Josh Hutchison talked briefly about the success of the fall 2020 virtual commencement ceremonies. The UI Commencement Team along with ITS and OSC built an in-house RSVP system in MyUI, developed custom branded slides, and recruited name readers from campus. The President’s Office and collegiate coordinators were also crucial partners in this university wide effort.

A link to a ceremony webpage showcasing the IOWA Marching Band performing Pomp and Circumstance was shared in the chat:

IVETS Move to Calvin Hall

Sara Sullivan - Office of the Registrar

IVETS has moved to the second floor of Calvin Hall! Room 207 is the main reception area and where most financial assistance will occur. 211 is the Veteran computer lab and 214 is the Veteran Lounge. 208 Calvin is a new classroom. IVETS Tutoring platoons and Veteran focused courses will be held in this classroom, but it is a general assignment classroom available for other courses, too. We are very excited to be welcoming students back to a new space with greater capacity. COVID protocols and capacity restrictions are still in place. At least 1 full time staff member will be in Calvin Hall during operating hours. The student Veteran spaces will be open extended hours.

Course Offering Calendar Updates

Renee Houser - Office of the Registrar

Proof Period

MAUI Offerings Planner is now open and available for you to access fall 2021 course offerings! Please be aware that the Course Offerings schedule for fall 2021 has been updated. The proof period will now run from Jan. 18 to Feb. 28, with MyUI Course Offerings available for students on March 1. We ask that departments and colleges submit their revisions no later than Monday, Feb. 22 to allow our office time to make the changes and have solid information available for students when displayed on MyUI the following week.

This proof period is an opportunity to review and update your course offerings and proof copy. Any sections still undergoing requested changes in workflow after the proof period will not be available for students to build schedules until they are in "Approved" status.

Course Offerings Update

As we look towards planning for fall 2021 courses, the University has decided to continue to use MERV-13 filters in buildings where they are currently being utilized.  In fall 2020 and spring 2021, classes that were in buildings where it was not possible to use the MERV-13 filters were reassigned.  The decision has made to continue this practice in fall 2021.

To assist with the reassignment of these class sections, as well as provide us with more flexibility, the decision has been made to move class sections with maximum enrollments of 150 or more to online for fall 2021.  There will be a process by which colleges may request exceptions which is as follows:

  • The Chair should contact the collegiate associate dean with any exception requests, including a rationale for why the class(es) should be taught in-person, by Monday, February 1st.
  • Collegiate associate deans should e-mail Renee Houser (renee-houser@uiowa.edu) with the list of approved courses, including the rationale for each by Friday, February 5th.
  • On February 8th, the Registrar Office will manually process all lectures in the 150+ category that have not received an approved exception.

Additionally, we will be resuming the previous practice and policy that any section scheduled to be held as fully online/web Delivery Mode should be created as an EX* DOE section. However, lectures that will be manually adjusted by the Office of the Registrar, will retain their standard section number as an Academic Unit Course Management Type.

Spring 2021 Reminders

For Spring 2021, use of the Instructor Request to Change Delivery Mode Form will resume on Monday, Jan. 25 for those instructors that wish to change the modality of their course to online or hybrid, temporarily or for the rest of the semester, after the session has begun.
