Dear colleagues,
Early this morning, Daum Hall experienced a small fire that was limited to one student room. Thankfully, students evacuated the building quickly and there were no injuries.
However, multiple rooms were affected by sprinkler water, primarily on the second floor. Emergency cleanup crews are on site and all residents have been allowed to return to their rooms. To expedite the clean-up process, building heat will be elevated today.
Our emergency response procedures were followed and worked as they should. University Housing and Dining staff have taken multiple steps support residents since 3:30 this morning:
- Temporarily relocating evacuated students to Burge Hall
- Providing blankets and coffee, then access to the market place once open
- Retrieving glasses and cell phones from rooms
- Coordinating cleanup efforts with emergency crews
- Floors 3-8 were able to access their rooms around 6:15 this morning
- As of 10:15 a.m., floors 1 and 2 were able to return
Students and families have received information about the situation and a second message to impacted residents will go out shortly. We are coordinating with Risk Management to help students manage their damaged belongings.
Thank you to everyone who responded and followed up with our students and staff -- the list is too long to name everyone. As always, your quick and caring response to our residents during difficulties is noticed and appreciated.
