UIVA

A Message from University of Iowa Veterans Association (UIVA) President Jessica Cupps and Vice President Sam Andrus

Welcome back to campus! Over the last few months we have endured many trials that have tested us in ways we never thought possible. Though the UIVA has also been tested, we are still here and strong as ever!

We are actively working on ways to better serve our veteran community and grow our organization this semester. That said, our first order of business is to assist the Iowa communities that were devasted by the derecho earlier this month. Many people are still in desperate need of basic supplies, so we will be putting together a plan on how we can best help in the coming days and weeks and push information on how to get involved.

Our annual ruck march to promote awareness for veteran suicide will look a little different this year, but we are planning to go ahead with a modified version as we hold this important tradition near to our hearts—be on the lookout for more information soon!

Thank you for your continued support and hope everyone makes the absolute best of this semester!

UIVA meets each Monday from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Zoom. Email Jessica at jessica-cupps@uiowa.edu for the secure meeting link.

Spring 2020 Academic Resources

Veteran Peer Advisors (VPA)

Veteran Peer Advising is a peer support program that connects student veterans in their first semesters at Iowa with student veterans who know the ropes. Advisors can help you with the transition to college life at Iowa, from where to get the best coffee to how to get help with that Gen Ed class.

Interested in getting connected to a peer advisor or becoming a peer advisor? Contact VPA at UI-VPA@uiowa.edu or read more here: https://veterans.uiowa.edu/veteran-peer-advising.

Tutoring

Looking for help with classes this semester?

Math Platoon

Math Platoon is a collaboration between Dr. Colleen Mitchell of the Department of Mathematics and IVETS. When Dr. Mitchell's husband, a Marine Corps Veteran, heard about IVETS's call for math professors to start a tutoring program, he told her how much of a difference this program would have made when he returned to college for his degree in engineering. She decided to make the program a reality.

Dr. Mitchell and a team of graduate students began holding twice-weekly tutoring sessions for military-connected students in January 2020. The meetings moved to Zoom when the university switched to virtual instruction that March.

Math Platoon meets twice a week during the fall and spring semesters.

Fall 2020 hours:

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Virtual Meetings held here: https://uiowa.zoom.us/J/97620516415
