Welcome to Campus: Helpful information for arriving in Iowa City

Welcome to Campus

Students and Hawkeye Families,

We hope you are excited about coming to campus and moving into the residence halls! With so many Hawkeyes returning to Iowa City, we wanted to provide you with some helpful information below about getting to Iowa City and your residence hall.

When heading to campus, please follow the driving directions posted on our move-in website to help with arrival. Additionally, please make sure you arrive at your selected move-in date and time. When you arrive on campus, our volunteers will be outside to help you complete the check-in process, hand you a dashboard slip, and direct you where to park. Please be aware that we will only have volunteers on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (August 16 – 19).

  • Family members: We’ll ask you to have 1 person stay with your vehicle at all times (while it is being unloaded) and please make sure to know your student’s room assignment information. If available, our move-in volunteers will begin to help you and your student unload belongings and bring them up to the student's room. Once your vehicle is empty, we will ask family members to move your vehicle to a different location so we can get ready for the next group of students for move-in. Families will be able to enter the hall and assist with final setup.
  • Students: Have your student ID ready and head inside to the check-in tables. You will then be issued your room key and update your emergency contact information. Meet up with your belongings and begin to unpack.
    • If you don't have your student ID yet, please bring a valid form of government issued photo ID to check in.
    • Students will also be expected to attend a virtual welcome meeting and their first floor meeting.

Don’t forget to talk to your roommate(s) before arrival to plan who is bringing what and when you plan to arrive. We’re looking forward to you joining us on campus!

Safe travels to Iowa City and Go Hawks!

Fall 2021

We are prepared to welcome all students to campus this fall with several protocols in place regarding COVID-19. This information can be found on our website. The University of Iowa strongly encourages students, faculty, and staff to receive the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as they are eligible, in consultation with their healthcare provider, but it is not mandatory to move into the residence halls. During your time living on campus, you will be required to self-report your COVID-19 status, and quarantine and isolation housing with meals is available, if needed.

Getting to campus

To help you get to campus as quickly as possible, you can find detailed driving directions that will help you navigate your way to campus on our website. Our directions bring you in to Iowa City from Interstate 80 to your residence hall. We strongly advise using these directions instead of a GPS navigation system, as we work to mitigate traffic (taking into account construction and other factors).

What to bring, Iowa One cards, and MicroChills

Information on what to bring with you to campus can be found here. Please remember your important documents: insurance (health and renter’s), photo identification, proof of employment eligibility. COVID-19 vaccines are not required to move into the halls, but if you have been vaccinated, it is helpful to have your card as a reference.

Students will need an Iowa One card to move into the residence halls. Still need a card? You can get your card here. Make sure to activate it prior to coming to campus. If you missed the deadline for having your card mailed, you can pick it up at the ID card office, but you must bring a government issued photo ID.

If you rented a MicroChill through College Products for the upcoming year, the MicroChill will be placed into your room prior to move-in and you will need to return it at the end of the year.

  • On-the-job training: We’ll provide the training you need to be successful — even if you’ve never worked with food before.
